At an antique store today, I bought a 1950s wall dispenser for foil, wax paper, and paper towels. It is in good condition, but a little dull with a few very faint rust-ish spots. How do I clean/ polish it. I believe the material may be aluminum, but not really sure. Whatever kitchen accessories in the 50s were usually made of, I guess it’s probably that. Any help appreciated, thanks.

First Aluminum does not rust. If it is brown or red rust, it is an iron based material. Touch a magnet to the metal, if it sticks, it is not Aluminum , rather an iron based material. Most likely it is sheet steel with a chrome finish. If that is the case, a very fine sand paper will remove the rust. Progressively sand the area with fine grit in one direction, then a finer grit at a 90 degree angle until the scratches are gone. Then repeat with finer grits until it is a 1000 grit or finer.
