I have a new home, built in 2006, in the last week my water heater keeps tripping and then tonight my light switch in the laundry room trips. This light switch is only for lights on the left side of my house (bathroom, kitchen, laundry room & dining room) it does not have any appliances as all large appliances in my home are on their own. What would be the reason that it won’t stay on. As soon as I flip it it makes a whir noise and goes right back off. The light switch in my laundry room sparked before all the lights went off.

Overloaded circuits, defective breakers, cheap switches/outlets, bad wiring or a defective appliance on the circuit.
Call an electrician before you burn down your house.
If you are the first owner you might have a builder’s warranty. On resale you might have purchased a home warranty or service plan. Either of these might cover the inspection and repair (subject to a deductible or service charge).
It sounds like a connection is loose in a switch box or light box, and the hot side it touching the ground or neutral side, if it won’t reset. You should contact the contractor that did the wiring on the home. You might even be surprised that they will fix it at no charge even though your warranty on that has expired (providing you haven’t changed anything with the wiring. If they are reputatble, they should step up and fix it for free. You may need to go to a manager if they try to tell to tell you that you are going to be charged. Struggling economy and the interent are a bad combonation for a contractor that doesn’t stand by his/her work
Replace your light switch. you might find some place where the wire is arching. If the sparks came from switch the problem should be in that area and they only cost $1.
1. Electric water heater element leakage to the ground. Replace both elements,$20 each.
2. Light switch has a loosing wire touching the ground case causing sparking and trip the breaker. Open it and tight it well,put away from metal case.
