living here I discovered that the kitchen cabinets are some kind of different wood that you can’t possibly put a nail through because they are like cement. I think they are wood but they are like cement. What kind of wood would be like cement. This must have been a cheap kind of wood. I think that the building was built in the 1960s if this helps answer my question. Why would they make kitchen cabinets out of wood that is like cement. It is so hard to even put my kitchen utensils up.

Hardwood.
What. Why would you put a nail through a cabinet. Put your stuff in a drawer like the rest of normal people.
Probably Formica covering. This is typical in apartments since it is pretty much maintenance and damage proof.
it sounds like press wood its saw dust and glue and press together. it hard to nail and to start a screw you have to drill a small hole to get it started. if you are using a small nail try a small electric nail gun.
Maybe so renters would not ruin their cabinets by putting nails in them
Who on earth puts nails in a cabinet to hang utensils.
If you MUST hang something on a cabinet, use something like Command hooks, so you can remove them when you leave and not leave holes in the cabinets.
