I got a puppy three days ago from a breeder in Fresno who had raised him as an outdoor dog. He used to have his food accessible 24/7 and go whenever he wanted as long as it wasn’t in his wire pen. Now he’s living in a 704 sq ft condo with no yard and the grassy area is about 1/4th to 1/3rd mile away so it takes a good 4-5 mins to walk there. I pick him up and carry him because he doesn’t walk on a leash but that’s a different problem altogether. I’m breaking rules by having him play so that’s a prob too.
I’m trying to decide how to potty train him. I’ve spent all day reading about crate training but my concern is that someone might not always be available to let him out every 3-4 hours. My boyfriend refuses to since he’s in school and it makes him tired and I’m going home to visit my parents pretty soon which could ruin the routine. It’s not really just letting him out in the yard as much as walking pretty far in the dark in a neighborhood that isn’t safe all the time (someone got stabbed across the street last year).
Right now, he considers the bathroom his home so he only pees on the pad there and even then, he waits to be let outside before he goes when he can. He eats in the kitchen so he generally doesn’t like going there either. When we play with him in the living room or around the condo though, he goes wherever he wants. We pick him up midstream, put him on the pad in the bathroom and say potty to no avail. The vet suggested putting pads where he currently goes which we’re considering as well.
He refuses to go on pads and generally just tries to eat them though so it probably wouldn’t work anyway. We’ve thought about everything — litter boxes, crate training, taking him outside, leaving a pad for him to go inside, etc. I’ve started taking him outside after he eats but I think he’s started not going to stay outside longer. I really don’t know what to do. pros and cons to every method. The biggest problem stemming from the fact that he can only hold it 3 hrs. Can I use pads now and crate train him later. We can’t buy too many supplies we can’t use cuz we’ve already spent 1500+ and unemployed right now. If I buy a crate or something, I want him to use it. I just leave him in the bathroom when he has to go and refuses but I really want to play with him too. He ends up going when we play =( Which method would you recommend for my situation.

Well, if you’re unemployed and short on money, then you definitely shouldn’t have gotten a dog. You should probably scold him when he goes potty while you’re playing. Also, get a doggy litter box for the house and when he starts to go potty, then pick him up and put him in the litter box. If he goes potty in the litter box even after you’ve picked him up, then praise him.
it may take some working around to see what he likes to go potty on, our puppy actually would only go in cardboard box lids that had newspaper in them, but the main thing that will effect his training is feeding. you should feed him a good meal in the morning so he’ll be full all day and take him out around twenty to thirty minutes later. every time he goes give him tons of love and talk to him in a sweet voice (maybe even offer a small treat when he goes) you shouldn’t give them a huge meal at night but only a little less than his breakfast. never scold him for going in the floor unless you catch him IN THE ACT i have found that this works for most dogs. and once they are about 6 months old they can hold their pee for a very long time (up to 12 hours for large dogs. 6 hours for small.) but also make sure that you take him out every hour or so throughout the day to ensure more successes and less messes. you should take him potty right before you play with him, give him up to 15 minutes to go and then play, have some newspaper close by while play and if he starts going while you are playing put him on some newspaper and then praise him when he goes.

whatever you do be consistent. it sounds like pad training is the key because you cant let him out if you crate train and i think you would confuse him if tried to crate train later. during the day he should be in an enclosed area at all times with the pad unless you are with him. if you want to play with him take him out first to see if he has to go. i dont know if it will work. i crate trained both my dogs and its the best thing we ever did. good luck.
I want to ask what do you plan on doing since you are unemployed if your dog get sick or injury tomorrow. Are you going to take him to the vet. Or will you have to surrender him to a shelter. Or will you just let him be sick or hurt.
So many things that you need to do.
Well here’s some advise, you need to teach the dog to go on a pad or a newspaper. You are suppose to praise the dog when he go at the right place. This means you have to have very good timing. When a dog start to sniff, pick him up, take him to the designated potty place. Whether it is going to be newspaper or a pee pad. Praise him with your associated command (potty, poo, pee pee whatever it is going to be and you and your boyfriend both need to do this together. consider it early baby training for you two in the event you want kids later).My dogs actually know what bathroom, room, outside etc mean but that take training and constant praising and rewarding.
If you haven’t gotten your dog all the puppy shots, this is the time to find a low cost vaccination place and get him his shots. You should have 3 sets of preventive and 2 rabies shots *(1 then a booster later) Then it should last for 1 year, after that, the rabies shot is once every 3 years with preventive every year. (some people/vet will say you don’t need preventive shots like 6-in-1, bordatella etc. That’s up to you and your vet.)
The reason why your dog chew the pads, I think is that he’s around 3 or 4 months old and is teething. He needs something to chew on and you might or might not have gotten him a toy to use as chew toy. (my dog use a stuff toy as a friend or a play toy but she doesn’t chew on it. Chew toys and play toys are different for dogs.) So he’s using the pad as a chew toy, that’s why he’s shedding it.
Dog also don’t like to spoil his dinner spot or sleeping spot. They don’t like to poo where to do other activities. He’s probably holding it so he can play and explore until he can’t hold it and that’s why he pees/poos anywhere when he plays. It’s like a toddler, they will play instead of go to the bathroom. My youngest does it she would hold it and when she can’t hold it anymore, she will scratch the door, pace, dance around until somebody let her out. Dogs are like permanent Toddlers and they all got different personalities.
Another thing, why can’t you play with the dog. You could but you should also look up training. you should teach him something, and walk him everyday. Since you don’t have a job and all, you should walk him 1 hour at least per day. Dog needs exercise no matter how big/small their yard is. It’s their time to smell the other animals and the outside world. Plus this will be a good time for him to learn and socialize (make sure he got all his shots first) Puppy age is the best time to socialize him.get him familiar with different type of people, objects and animals. If you plan to have people over at your house, you should do this. (I made a mistake of not socializing my dogs enough, she is now very nervous when a new person want to say hi.) It’s best to expose them to as much as possible.
I don’t know what else you want to know but these are the basics.
I don’t let my dog eat 24/7 either because I don’t want to have ants.depends on the breed, some like to hid their food, put food everywhere, take food with them, eat only when they feel like it. I don’t want to them to over eat and I like that they eat on my schedule. And when my schedule change, theirs change too. But that’s a personal preference. Dogs are creatures of habit, if everything is the same for them everyday, they are happy. If you walk your dog everyday at 4:00p, you will see your dog pace around 3:55 until you take him. It’s interesting how they have such a good internal clock.
