We found this out b/c when we bought the house there was a leak coming from upstairs bath to kitchen. Called plumbers - one guy came out and the next thing we know another guy from his company comes and then they tell us there is an emergency and they leave. A few years later the local plumbing supply co. , in conversation with my husband, finds out what house we own (former banker’s home) and begins to tell us the layout of our house because he knows that this local company came to fix a leak, left without doing so because they stole a large case filled with money that was hidden in a plumbing access panel. This bothers me every day. Their business has grown by probably 1000% since this time. What would you do. The law says that this is theft because it was placed in an above ground area and forgotten about and becomes the property of the home owner. But what would you do about this.

Well that one is going to be tough to prove in any court. Even with documented proof that there was a case of money in the house, you still have the uphill battle by trying to prove the plumbers actually took it from the house.
Talk to a lawyer, but unfortunately I don’t think you have a shot. Good luck.
