One word, NIGHTMARE. I did white in my laundry room and regret it. I see it in all of the design books and magazines and believe it is going to be the new trend, but that doesn’t mean I will follow it based on my experience. The biggest problem is that even if it is clean, dust settles on it and makes it look dirty. Water stains show and then attract the dust which looks disgusting. I even had white applilances in the past all of which were just about as difficult as stainless (which I now have) to keep clean.

My old kitchen had pine cabinets, white countertops and appliances. We remodeled last year (major remodel- tore down walls, etc). We went with granite countertops and maple cabinets with stainless appliances. But that is what we wanted. The appliances we had were older and we didn’t want to put them in our new kitchen.

I think white tops and appliances look fine. It brightens up the kitchen and its easy to see when you miss a spot cleaning.which may or may not be a good thing ;)

I don’t think white will ever really go out of style. I would go with formica countertops. What is the point of spending all that money on Corian if you are just going to get white. My older white formica top looked fine when we pulled it off.

I would never go back to white. It was so hard to keep clean, everything showed and it was a stain collector. I think any other choice would be better than white.

If you go with white in a solid surface you wont have any problems. I love white in kitchens.it looks very clean and fresh. Solid surface counter tops require no upkeep. I love mine.

Three words: Wilsonart High Definition. If you put in white Corian tops you are going to end up making the kitchen looked washed out, and although the solid surface materials can be sanded and “renewed”, I think you will be dissatistfied. Why not use the industry’s best laminate with a Corian Edge or Gem-Loc edge where the solid surface is the accent and the top is laminate. The is incredibly less expensive and you don’t have to have a certified installer put the tops in which will save you LOTS of money. I work at a countertop wholesale company and over 75% of the laminate jobs we sell are in Wilsonart HD. The laminate is INCREDIBLY durable and the colors/patterns resemble different types of stones. You can also find Pionite Stonex and Formica Honed and Riverwash collections that will resemble a higher end material. Wilsonart HD is super hot right now and many homebuyers know it as “Deepstar”.

Worried about doing an undermount sink with laminate. It can be done. Check out Karranproducts.com and counterseal.com for the sinks and how they install into laminate tops.

As a sidenote, you can always do the island in a solid surface or stone material with a laminate ctop perimeter. May homebuyers now are mixing products because of their budgets.

You are on the right track removing that butcher block. It is completely out of date.

We redid our countertops last year. had corian “aruba” installed. Went with the bullnose built up edge. It (aruba) was on sale and the sink was included as a bonus. I forget if it was free or only $50. The sink thing is not an uncommon promo and is a great value. My local home center had that promo and Home Depot didn’t.
Aruba is a speckled type. I think that group of colors are good on several fronts. they hide messes better, and even tho they won’t be confused for granite they still have that sort of look. Plain white would show everything.
I would check several of your local dealers and see if they have any promos on. With those irs incentive checks coming out, I think there will be alot of businesses trying to get your business.
There are alot of very cool laminates out there. and now they can do them in a bullnose look, except for inside corners.
By the way. I’ve had my counters for a year now and still absolutely Love them. My husband couldn’t get over how fantastic they looked. he even commented on the nice Feel of it. *has a “softer” feel then granite tho still cool to the touch. We ended up also replacing the cooktop at the same time (went from electric to kenmore induction.)
The wilsonart hd is a very nice laminate but you won’t get that seamless look and as mentioned before, can’t do a rounded edge on an inside corner.
