We’ve picked out cabinets, tile, appliances, etc. (haven’t paid for them - just made selections). Today we’re meeting the contractor to get a labor estimate. I have a few ideas of what I want to ask, but I’d like to hear from someone “in the know.” What specifically should I find out before signing on the dotted line.

ask him how long will the job take.make sure they do not go over budget .tell them if they go over budget to make sure they get the ok from you first.
#1 ASK FOR REFERENCES AND CONTACT THEM TO SEE IF HE FINISHED THEIR JOB IN A TIMELY MANNER,QUALITY OF WORK.IF HE’S LICENSED CHECK THE BBB OF ANY COMPLAINTS ALSO BEFORE YOU SIGN THE DOTTED LINE.IF HE HAS HAD PROBLEMS BEFORE WELL.
Please take some time to chew over these materials in case you haven’t already. It’s not like remodeling is an everyday thing. And enjoy your wonderful kitchen.

ask for a copy of his code certificate, this will let you know that he has been educated on legal building codes in your area. ask him for a copy of his licenses even drivers license and a list of the sub contractors he will be using, eletcrician, plumber, ect. and proof of licenses from them.
make him give you a written contract of what he will be doing, for how much and a defiant start and finish dates.
have in writing how much he will be charging you for changes you make during construction. If you make a change from the original contract he my jump the hourly rate to a staggering $100.00per hour. also ask him how many guys will have keys to your house and who they are with documented proof.
